20090605 Do It Yourself / Do It With Others
Quiet morning in the wikiplaza, the action hasn't yet begun today. I will take advantage to blog about the days before.
DIY / DIWO, that's it Do It Tourself & Do It With Others is the name of one of the nights to come, and somehow one of the general principles of the project. Of course the DIY is big historic meme coming at least from the 60s and retaken by the hacker movement. It is about empowerment and ingenuity, and about not depending on the big companies, specialists or the state to get to your things done, your life going on.
Once it is operating the wikiplaza might look complicated, and it probably is, but it has been put together assembling the tools, and practical knowledge accummulated during the last years not only by the people participating theses days, but rather to wider communities who are willing to share their knowledge: the free software movement, the hacker culture, the hacklabs, the biopolitical experimental social centers - so often squatts - that have proliferated throughout Europe during the last decades... So, Do It With Others... These multitude, -as some of us liked to call it for some time, and its cyborg becomings are exploring the promises - or maybe the actual enactment - of a different Europe, of a different world... Not naively trusting in technologies as a liberating and equalitarian agentby itself, but trying to connect it with other politicial and social struggles, such as the struggle against precarization, the reapropriation of the commons - digital and physical - as we are doing here with public space -, the freedom of movement, the reflection on ecology - or rather ecosophy, such a characteristic Guattarian name, after whom, by the way, we are naming the more casual area of the plaza: les Mille Plateaux...
No more flow of conscience at the moment...I would like to go on writing later on about the encounter with and presentation by Giuseppe Silvi, aka bitwatt, a true pioneer of the concept of piazza telematiche; about the World Information meeting and the discussion of density that we had with Saskia Sassen, and i guess about many other things happening and with which the WikiPlaza is mapping itslef, making rhizomatic connectings with...
